Exercise for Children

Most children today spend an unhealthy amount of time watching TV, computer and playing video games. This means that they generally aren't getting the physical exercise they need for a healthy life. Studies have shown that children who are idle and don't get a good amount of exercise are more likely to become addicted to drugs and alcohol.

If exercise is incorporated into a child's life at an early age, it’s more likely to become a habit as the child grows older. It's important that you set a good example for your child. If you enjoy hiking or bicycling, let your child come along once in a while and see how important exercise is to you and how enjoyable it can be. This will make him/her more likely to incorporate it into his own life and keep the habit as an adult.

Games are a good way for children to get exercise. Tag, kick ball, dodge ball, football and any other game that requires a lot of running are excellent ways to get your child moving. If your children are old enough, have them walk to their friend’s house rather than getting a ride from you. If your child is not yet old enough to be on their own, you could walk with them. Take them to the park and let them run and play. Put on some music with a good beat and let your children dance; it's even more fun if you dance with them. Exercise doesn't have to be the same routine every day and it should be fun and exciting.
