Living With Flat Feet

Flat feet, also known as overpronation, is caused when the arch of the foot collapses under a lot of weight or extreme pressure. This can lead to injuries such as stress fractures and other foot conditions. One of those conditions is known as plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is when the plantar fascia stretches out and gets inflamed. Another condition is known as heel spurs. Heel spurs happen when the plantar fascia is pulled away from the heel bone and calcium deposits build up. Both conditions can be very painful. Other conditions caused by flat feet include, but are not limited to, bunions and calluses.

Having flat feet makes you more prone to injury during running. Shin pain is common in runners with flat feet because there is extra strain on the feet and calves. However, having this condition does not have to keep you from running. People with flat feet should check their shoes for proper fit. Wearing a runner’s shoe can help with this condition.

There is help for people with flat feet. Although there is the question of whether going barefoot helps or hurts, there are special insoles and orthotics that take pressure and pain away from the arch. Some of these orthotics can be hard and uncomfortable, but some manufacturers make soft insoles that are made to cool and soothe the foot. Some other treatments that are available are ankle braces, surgery and medications for pain and inflammation. These treatments are helpful because they are made especially for people with flat feet.
