A family bike ride every day can be something for everyone to look forward to. It is a great time to share, not only with the family, but perhaps with some of the neighbors too. It is great exercise, entertainment, and an opportunity to explore the area.
One family got out their bikes after dinner to ride in a small town where the street was off from the main road. As they rode, all the children in the surrounding houses came out on their bikes to ride with them. Even two elderly neighbors got out their three-wheelers and rode with everyone. You can imagine the fun they all had, from the smallest child to the oldest one there.
It is important to keep the biking safe. Be certain that the bikes have tires that are filled and the brakes work correctly. Do not ride in the opposite direction of traffic. Have reflectors on the bikes. Watch for hazards such as holes, gravel, oil or wet conditions. Follow good bike etiquette and if you are riding on a trail, be sure to remain on that trail.
Perhaps the most important safety feature is the helmet. Have a strict rule that no one is to ride without one. Most bad injuries are head injuries and helmets are effective in preventing them. Proper fit means that they are level and snug enough that when the child yawns, it pulls the helmet down. The adults need to set a good example for the children by never riding without their helmets. If you are going on a longer trail ride, you will need to take water, sunscreen, a tire pump, a cell phone, and if you need it, a map.
