Exercise is a key component of healthy growth mentally and physically for teenagers. Most schools promote physical fitness through Physical Education courses and organized sports. The general consensus among experts is that physically fit youths perform better in school. However, sometimes the exercises incorporated into PE classes can seem tedious and unappealing to teens. So, there are other options for staying fit and enjoying exercise at the same time!
Cardiovascular fitness is extremely important to a teenager’s health. But the idea of sprinting and running laps every day can seem dreadful. Teens can achieve a cardiovascular workout without even getting on the track. Of course, organized sport is one way. But, instead of waiting to attend practice where the teen faces painful drills, teens can organize their own pick-up games. Because they initiated the game, they can feel more in control and relax and have a good time while gaining a great workout at the same time.
Muscular strength is also another important component of growth and bone strength which will influence a teen’s health later in life. However, teenagers should approach strength building activities like lifting weights with caution. If used properly, weights offer plenty of benefits. But if abused or used without training, weight lifting can lead to serious injury. So teenagers should work with experienced adults when hitting the gym.
Strength training can be achieved in a number of other ways. Outdoor activities such as rock climbing, hiking, skiing, and others promote strength. Teens can also train at home or with friends. Nintendo Wii and Dance Dance Revolution are entertaining video games which now offer ways for teenagers to get their video game fix while also exercising, sometimes without even realizing it.
