Like everyone else, teens need to get enough exercise. Today too many teens spend time in the classroom and then go home and either get on the computer or play video games. If they are playing an interactive video game they are at least getting some type of physical activity but more is needed. It is highly recommended that teenagers exercise at least three times a week in a manner in which they will raise their heart rate for no less than 20 minutes each time.
If a teen has not been exercising there will probably be some soreness in the beginning because of using muscles they had not been using. The soreness will go away. You just need to remember to warm up first and don’t overdo. There are many things that teens can do either by themselves or with friends to get exercise but feel like they are just having fun. There are sports like football, basketball, inline skating or tennis. You can also swim, cycle or walk at a fast pace. When doing these things with a group you don’t feel like you are exercising.
If a teen lives five or six blocks from school it would be helpful to walk to and from school each day. By starting your day out with a brisk walk you will feel much better the rest of the day. Exercise not only helps the body but it stimulates the brain as well. Teens have better self esteem and will sleep better if they are active.
