Maintaining Fitness in Middle Age

It is important to be fit at any age, but middle age is imperative if you want to prepare your body and health for when you are older. All preparation done at any age is helping to get your body better for the next decade of life.

When you reach middle age, the exercises that you did in your 20s and 30s are not good for you anymore. As a matter of fact, the exercises that you did then might actually be dangerous for a middle aged person. A person in their 40s and 50s usually cannot do the cardiovascular exercises they once used to. That is putting too much stress on the heart and joints. Exercises for the middle aged person needs to be monitored more closely by a physician. That is not to say that this age group is fragile. The best exercise is moderate in nature and resistance workouts are very effective. These are mostly non-stress exercises. Walking is excellent and light weight training is also effective.

This age group is known as the boomer generation. The oldest part of this group is approaching 60 now. The majority of the boomers fall into the middle aged category. They still want to look young and are quite active. Many in this age group are having sports related injuries because they don’t want to slow down, but their bodies are making them do just that. Middle aged persons will start to gain weight because the metabolism is changing to a slower mode. To stay fit, you need to eat a lower calorie diet, in smaller portions.
