More parents are starting to take a closer look at their children and the state of their physical well-being. Many of the habits that adults retain through their lives are based upon the foundation given as children, so it is obvious that a sound fitness program should be developed during childhood.
As with any activity, a fitness program should be fun for the kids. If physical activity is perceived as work, it will be very difficult to entice your child to join in and may result in a lifetime of aversion to any fitness activity. There are several organized programs available to help parent and communities get children involved. One such program is We Can. It has three basic areas of behavior modification, better food choices, increased physical activity and the reduction of time spent if front of a computer, television or video game. We can has been developed to target ages 8 through 13.
If you would rather take a less structured approach you can design your own program that is based on your child’s like and dislikes. The advantage here is that if your child already has an interest in a given sport, such as basketball, you can involve them in finding information and fitness activities that pertain strictly to that sport. Make a training plan or routine that can be followed daily. Be sure it is fun and make every effort to see that it is followed once you put it in place. Whatever course you choose to follow, the important thing is to get your child involved in a physical activity of some kind.
