Self discipline is a trait appreciated by many but owned by very few people. Many of us are self conscious about disciplining ourselves and the impact that self discipline has on our life. It is easy to learn about self discipline but it is so hard to put into practice.
When it comes to fitness, self discipline should be a priority. Staying in shape is not an accessory, but a necessity. That's why it is important to keep in mind the reason that we want to stay in shape. For some of us, we stay in shape to look nice in our favorite outfit. Whatever the reason, working out and eating right takes a tremendous amount of self discipline. There are also many of us that use doctor's recommendations to prevent or treat a symptom or disease by practicing self discipline in order to stay in shape. Staying focused on something we care about can be a great motivator in achieving self discipline.
One reason we lose our desire to stay in shape and we can't discipline ourselves is that we don't set small and realistic goals. We feel overwhelmed about the things that need to be achieved. Rather than setting specific motivators, we tend to make generalized statements with no specific time frame. For example, instead of saying "I need to exercise more often and lose some weight" say, "this month I will lose three pounds by going to the gym three times a week." The second statement gives us a schedule to go by and we are more likely to stick to the plan.
