Keeping Your Kids Fit and Active

These days, TV and electronic game systems compete for children’s attention more and more, so keeping kids fit and active is becoming more of a challenge. Increasing numbers of children are staying inside instead of going out and playing. Childhood obesity rates continue to rise and other health problems like diabetes are becoming more prevalent. Being active in childhood sets the foundation for future health by creating healthy bones, muscles, and joints. Here are some tips on how to keep kids active and healthy.

The first thing to do is limit the things that don’t promote physical activities, like TV and video games. Not only limit the amount of time they spend doing these things, but limit where they can be done. If a TV and game system are located in the family room instead of the child’s bedroom, you can monitor their use more easily. Gradually replace time spent with the TV and game system with fun outdoor activities.

Children don’t need to be involved in an organized sport to be active. Find little ways throughout your child’s day to incorporate physical activity, like dancing while helping to clean the house. Setting the right example is the best way to teach your children the importance of being active and healthy. Let them see you exercise, or better yet, do it together. You may not think so, but children would love to spend more time with their parents doing fun activities. Go outside and just play together. Join your kids in a game of tag, catch, or go for a bike ride. Something as simple as flying a kite gets the kids outside and away from sedentary activities.
