A healthier way to eat is a problem facing our country today. Americans in general have the worlds worst diet, especially when it comes to daily food consumption. Saturated fats, fast foods and chain restaurants are all part of our way of life. There is a desperate need for a change in our diet.
Whole grains, fruits and veggies, nuts, and low fat dairy are a basic healthier way to go. These few things are needed in a balanced diet. Start out making small changes to your diet, as a way to slowly incorporate healthier foods. Small changes seem to hold to habit more than drastic changes. Finding a balance in what you eat seems to be the key in making changes in eating habits.
Energy density, which is volume of food versus calories in food, plays a factor also. Examples of high density foods are sweets and processed foods. A small volume of these have a high amount of calories so eat in moderation. Low density foods are fruits and vegetables. Large portions of these can be consumed without a lot of calories. Fiber is also a major factor in your diet, helping you to digest and making you feel fuller after you eat. The worst thing that you can eat is saturated fats and Trans fats. These fats come from fried foods and a lot of fast foods. Try to replace them with olive oil or canola oil when cooking food.
To eat healthy does not mean the world is coming to an end and you have to give up all your favorite foods. It just means that you should eat in proper portions and cut out some of the unhealthy things that you are used to eating.
